The Department of Preventive Medicine was founded in 1977 (formerly known as the Preventive Medicine Teaching and Research Group). In 2016, it was taken over by the School of Public Health from the School of Basic Medicine.

This department is responsible for teaching An Introduction to Public Health, Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Medicine, Environmental Hygiene, Hygiene Toxicology and other specialized courses in preventive medicine, as well as the university’s elective courses in preventive medicine and An Introduction to Preventive Medicine for the university’s students in other undergraduate, international or adult education programs other than preventive medicine majors. In recent years, the department undertakes education and teaching reform projects at all levels, and participates in developing monographs and textbooks. It has undertaken 5 projects from Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and participated in more than 20 projects from the National Science and Technology Support Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Shanghai Municipal Health Commission and university-level scientific research projects. A project participated by the department won a 3rd prize for Scientific and Technological Achievements in Work Safety awarded by the State Administration of Work Safety. In 2018, the paper with a teacher of the department as the first author was published in Environment International (IF:7.297), a CAS grade-one SCI journal, which has important reference value for studying the impact of environmental chemical pollutants on human health.
